Applecross, Matheson Rd

Discipline : building design

Scope : site analysis & masterplanning, concept design, development application, tender.

Area : 530sqm.

Construction value : $1.8m.

Designed for a family of four, the brief called for a friendly yet luxurious and modern family home. The project explores the notions of modern living and the outcome is an upside down home which saw the formal living and kitchen areas on the upper floor to catch views of the beautiful Swan River. Separate zones were created for their teenage children. However an important consideration associated with the creation of these ‘zones’ was the need to ensure that a crossover occurred and social integration was maintained.

A sloping site saw the design of the home being split over 3 levels. The ground floor being the utilities zone having the garage, water tank store, laundry area and pool pump room. The first floor being the children’s zone with the family/tv room, games room, two bedrooms plus a guest bedroom. The first floor also has a small meals prep area which opens out to the alfresco, a seamless interaction between the indoors and outdoors. The second floor being the adult zone has the master suite and formal living areas. A terrace was important to the family who love to entertain and enjoy the views and the beautiful weather that Perth has to offer. A danpalon canopy was used over the terrace and alfresco areas to allow light to penetrate through to the living zones whilst still provide shelter.

There is a generous garden with a lap pool and pockets of open space. Every habitable room has either a visual or physical connection to the landscaped garden. Natural stone and timber are used for their appearance and tactile qualities. Situated in such proximity to the river, the home called for visual and physical links to the surround.
